Why does my night keep getting worse?

So not only did I have the weird pipe thing that caused the problems with the toilet but around 10:30 I heard a weird pop noise. At first I just sat here in my living room looking down the hall to the bathroom. I couldn't get the noise out of my head so I went down to the bathroom to look at the sink and toilet, I thought maybe something had broke on the toilet again. Then I hear it again and there was no doubt where it was coming from because there was smoke!!! My water heater was smoking and it had made the popping noise. I didn't know what to do so I called 911. By that point the popping and smoke had stopped, but the smell of smoke was still heavy in the air. So I talk to the women dispatcher and I tell her it stopped smoking and popping, but she told me if it start again I was to call her again. I then call Joe and I'm bawling because two things in one night and I was upset and scared. I had the closet door from the water heater open and was keeping an eye on it. I also had my hall door open to keep an eye out for the fire department and to hopefully get some fresh air in. So the fire department shows up and my neighbors to the front of the building all seem to be outside. Nothing like being embarrassed when the fire fighters walk up stairs and ask where the fire was. I waved them in and they all like "Oh yeah" because they could too smell the smoke. They turned off the power to it and took out the small componets that were actually burning. Also disconnected the wires. They told me I'd be without hot water till Maintenance got here. Well while they were here I called Maintenance (well I paged them) and they showed up right after the fire department left. They fixed it and I guess now I have hot water. But now I'm kind of afraid of my water heater. Now I'm sitting here sweating because it's so humid with all my windows open with fans blowing in cooler fresh air. I want out of here so bad, but don't want to move out of my ward. I don't know what to do!
